{Stairway Designs: Transforming Both Design and Utility

Stairway designs are more than just a way of moving between levels; they are a crucial part of a building’s design. From sleek options to grand styles, staircases come in a selection of options to fit any space. Whether you’re working with a compact area or a large space, there’s a stairway design to suit your requirements.

{Floating Stairway Designs: Elevating Contemporary Design

Floating staircases are characterised by their minimalist design, which makes the steps appear to suspend in mid-air. This effect is achieved by securing the treads to a concealed structure, eliminating the need for bulky risers. Floating stairway designs are often used in modern interiors to create a spacious feel. The lack of obtrusive elements allows other design elements, such as artwork, to become focal points. Although visually appealing, Floating stairway designs must be carefully engineered to maintain stability.

{Curved Stairs: Elevating Design Style

A Curved staircase features a graceful, sweeping design that adds a element of elegance to any space. Curved stairs are easier to navigate than Spiral ones, thanks to their gentle design. Curved staircases are often seen in grand homes, traditional structures, or high-end hotels as a centrepiece. Curved stairs are more high-end to build due to the expert craftsmanship they require. The result is a breathtaking design feature that enhances the visual appeal of a space.

{The Practicality of L-Shaped Staircases

This option of stairway design is marked by a turn, often with a landing to break up the flights. The L-shape is ideal for small spaces, as it allows the steps to fit into a corner effectively. The platform acts as a resting point, improving the overall usability of the stairway design. L-shaped staircases are often considered less risky than Straight designs because the landing in the flight reduces the risk of injuries. The L-shape adds aesthetic value, with the bend serving as a design feature in the home.

{Why U-Shaped Stairway Designs Are a Popular Choice

The layout of U-shaped stairs involves two flights of treads with a landing that switches direction. U-shaped staircases are typically used in grand homes or buildings with ample upward space. The U-shape provides a space-saving footprint, making it a space-saving option despite its impressive appearance. The halfway landing provides a place to pause and can be decorated with decorative elements. This style is associated to elegance and is a popular choice in high-end or rustic homes.

{Spiral Stairway Designs: A Space-Saving Marvel

The layout of Spiral stairs involves stairs that wind around a supporting column in a helical pattern. This style is great for compact spaces, such as studios, where a conventional stair might not fit. This design is often constructed from materials like metal, offering creative creative opportunities. Despite their efficient design, Spiral stairs can be less user-friendly for individuals with physical challenges or heavy items. Despite this, their one-of-a-kind design makes them a popular choice for adding a design element to a space.

Thousands of homes could have 'unsafe staircases'

Thousands of council homes could have potentially dangerous staircases which need to be replaced.

Newcastle City Council said more than 3,000 homes and 57 block of flats have staircases with horizontal guarding which can pose a risk to children climbing up the panels and either falling or becoming trapped.

The authority said the design, now banned under modern building standards, was a category one hazard under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).
